5 ways to get the most out of your packaging

In an ever more visual world where attention spans are held for less time than a toddler with an ice cream on a hot day, it’s never been more important to stand out from the crowd and gain the attention of your target audience.

Well designed, cleverly made and visually arresting packaging is a great way to do this, allowing you to have a direct conversation with your customer without saying a word.

Anyone who’s ever purchased an Apple product will know that the experience of opening up the meticulously well-crafted boxes is an event in of itself and this has translated into the food and drink game, where beautiful packaging can be the difference between your business going viral or not.

Here are a few tips to help you be more Apple:

1. Keep it real

Sit back and think about your brand and its values. How do you want people to view it? What does it represent? Your packaging should be an extension of this. The look, feel and even the texture of each component can help you to create an emotional connection with your customer by making them laugh, telling them your brand story or by just looking so damn cool they want to snap a picture of it.

2. Come to play

Don’t give in to fear. Be bold, be brave and show what your brand is really about. Bright colours. Patterns. Unique typography. It’ll all go toward given your packaging a USP and catch the attention of potential customers in the street or as they scroll through social media.

3.  Sharing’s caring

Social media can be a gift and a curse at times, but when it comes to marketing, it’s a fantastic (and often free) tool when harnessed in the right way. Make it as easy as possible for your customers to do your marketing for you by adding social handles and hashtags to your packaging. These should work around the main logo which must remain clear and central to the design to ensure brand recognition.

4.  Beauty in simplicity

It’s often easier said than done but try not to over complicate or overthink it. It’s important to strike the right balance between being bold and playful and visual overkill. Try to create a design framework that incorporates elements of the look and feel, typography etc and keep it consistent across all of your products.
