Nothing Fancy: The Simple Things, Done Really Well
Tucked into Chapelfield Gardens in Norwich, Nothing Fancy does exactly what its name promises. No gimmicks, no trend-chasing, just great coffee and quality ingredients that people keep coming back for. We caught up with Rhys, the founder behind the brand, to talk about keeping things simple, social media, and why the details always end up mattering more than you think.
Hey Rhys! For anyone unfamiliar with Nothing Fancy, tell us who you are and what the brand is all about.
Nothing Fancy is an independent coffee shop based in Chapelfield Gardens in Norwich. We focus on doing simple things really well: great coffee and quality ingredients in a relaxed atmosphere. We don't try to overcomplicate things or chase trends for the sake of it. The aim has always been to create somewhere people enjoy visiting, and to serve products we're proud of. That’s exactly where the name came from, the idea that things don't need to be complicated to be good.
Social media seems central to everything you do. How important has it been for growing the business?
It's been huge for us. It allows people to connect with the personality behind the brand and gives us a chance to share new products, events and everyday moments. It's helped create a real community around Nothing Fancy and introduced us to people who might never have discovered us otherwise. The main thing we've learned is that consistency matters more than perfection. People want authentic content, not polished advertising.
Finally, what would you say to someone who's still using unbranded packaging?
Packaging is often the first thing people see of your brand. And with coffee especially, it's something customers carry around with them and share online. Branded packaging helps create recognition and makes your business look established and professional. For us, custom cups have become part of the identity of Nothing Fancy and have helped strengthen the brand far beyond the four walls of the kiosk. It's a relatively small detail, but those details add up.
A lot of hospitality brands spend years trying to feel welcoming and never quite get there. Nothing Fancy does it in a name. It removes the gatekeeping and intimidation that haunts specialty coffee, putting every customer at ease before they order. It also gives the entire team a clear energy to work from without having to read through pages of brand guidelines. It’s great branding, done at the highest level.
